Printed pieces planned and/or executed in the past year by a student who is currently a Yale undergraduate. Eligible pieces include college publications and ephemera, or may be the product of class assignments or self-initiated publishing activities. Printmaking projects, per se, are not eligible.
Separate categories recognize the graphic excellence of pieces produced in the wide range of available media, in the traditional technologies of handset metal types, offset lithography, and screen printing, as well as in digitally rendered forms.
One sample of each entry should be submitted. In pencil, on the back of each piece, should be written clearly the name(s) of the student(s) involved, each student’s class, residential college, and permanent mailing address.
Bring submissions to the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library Special Collections, 180 York Street, lower level (open Monday through Thursday, 10 am–12 pm and 1–4 pm, and on Friday, May 2,
from 10 am–12pm)
Winning pieces become part of the Arts of the Book permanent collection.
Prizes will be announced and awards made at an informal ceremony on May 2 at 4:30 pm in the Arts of the Book Room, where all entries will be on view.
The Lohmann Prizes aim to recognize and celebrate the broad range of interest in planning, craft, and invention that gives undergraduate design and printing at Yale its singular character. The judges are eager to see printed work of all kinds in order to reward skill, discipline, and imagination. Entries not selected may be retrieved by the entrants following the awards ceremony.
The Lohmann Prizes were established in 1967 in honor of Carl C. Lohmann, BA 1910, founding member of the honorable company of college printers, lifelong typophile,and secretary of the university from 1927 to 1953 .
